  • Soweto Gospel Choir

    Performing in Dallas for the first time, the Soweto Gospel Choir brings earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, acapella numbers as well as accompaniment by an exciting four-piece band and percussion section. Added to the mix are energetic dancing and vibrant, colourful costumes. This young dynamic choir performs both traditional and contemporary music, adding its own unique feel and interpretation to both. The choir performs in 6 of South Africa’s 11 official languages. This magnificent 52 strong, choir, styled with a contemporary feel, leaves all who hear it stunned with emotion. It is small wonder that they are charting a meteoric rise to international fame. Those that saw the 46664 Concert in Cape Town 2003, under the auspices of former President Nelson Mandela, witnessed Soweto Gospel Choir in action alongside other musical greats like Bono, Queen, Anastacia, Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Cliff and the Eurythmics.

    2010 Vogel Alcove Arts Performance Event--The nineteenth annual benefit for the Vogel Alcove Childcare Center for the Homeless will star Terry Fator, who was named “one of the best entertainers in the world” by Simon Cowell.  A Dallas area native, Mr. Fator has become a national sensation with appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, and Oprah.  Mr. Fator will take time out from his ten-year $100-million contract with The Mirage in Las Vegas to perform in the Meyerson Symphony Center. A remarkable ventriloquist with a great singing voice, he (and his hilarious cast of characters) will deliver spot-on impressions of famous country, soul, and classic rock singers.  Tuesday, April 20, 2010, 7:45 p.m.

    Formed in the 1980s, the Mark Morris Dance Group has traveled worldwide as one of the world’s leading dance companies.  The company is dedicated to performing to live music and has collaborated with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Indian Composer Zakir Hussain, and jazz pianist Ethan Iverson among other film and television projects.  The Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, NY, houses rehearsal space for the dance community and an outreach program for local children.

    It's a bird, it's a plane, it's superman

    June 18 - July 25, 2010 Potter Rose Performance Hall Dee and Charles Wyly TheatreAmerica's greatest superhero was also the star of one of Broadway's lost musical treasures. Now, this mid-'60s musical, with great songs by the legendary Charles Strouse (Annie) and Lee Adams (Bye Bye Birdie) is part of the Wyly's historic first season. In this major "revisal," the comic book-based musical has a hip new script by the ingenious young playwright and comic book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. There will be nothing mild-mannered about this high-voltage revival, when Superman flies in to help Clark Kent and Lois Lane face off against a team of super villains. With singing, dancing, colorful sets and costumes, and a tuneful Broadway score, Superman will be an uplifting end to DTC's 51st season.

    DBR

    Known for fusing his classical music roots with a myriad of soundscapes, Haitian-American artist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) has carved a reputation for himself as a passionately innovative composer, performer, violinist and band leader. The work he is bringing to Dallas was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Darwin’s Meditation for The People of Lincoln is a musical setting of a pocket play by Daniel Beaty that explores an imagined conversation between Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln, and the political relationship between England, North America and Haiti.

    Eddie Palmieri, Michel Camilo, and introducing Alfredo RodriguezThe piano plays a special role in helping to define the sound of Latin Jazz. The powerful block chording, ascending and descending keyboard runs and percussive style of play used by the piano masters of Latin Jazz have made the instrument a  rhythmic backbone of the genre, just as much if not more so, than a melodic and harmonic tool.  Three of the greatest living Latin Jazz pianists performing today are featured in PIANO LATINO.

    The Arts Scholarship Gala will recognize, Dr. Paul Baker, our school founder and 1st Artistic Director; Mr. Jack Matthews, an innovative commercial developer of projects such as the South Side on Lamar, the Dallas Convention Center Hotel (under construction), Palladium, Gilley's and a great supporter of the artist community; and Mr. Chris Arnold, of EyeCon Studios (eye-c.com/proj.htm), a nationally renowned muralist and an alumnus from our visual arts cluster.

    The theme of the event is "Imagine the possibilities..." and will feature artistic performances from students at Booker T. Washington, including an ensemble from the highly successful fall production, "Always Imagine," and a live auction for exciting items that are unique and "priceless!" The program, directed by Bruce Coleman, will begin at 8 p.m.
