Constructing the Center: October 2007

Get a glimpse of construction in early fall 2007, when the audience chamber of the Winspear Opera House was taking shape and when the stagehouse was in the early phase of construction. Work had also begun on the concrete "super columns" of the Wyly Theatre.

Constructing the Center: October 22, 2007

In late October 2007, the project managers provided an update on construction progress. Go inside the audience chamber of the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House with Paul Sipes to see the beginning of the installation of the steel framework for the seating tiers and hear Jeff Wagner, project manager for McCarthy Construction Cos., explain how the superstructure of the Wyly Theatre will be built.

With the concrete superstructure of the Wyly Theatre at two-thirds of its full height in November 2007, Dallas Center for the Performing Arts project manager Michael Korns describes the next steps in construction. Jeff Innmon, the Center's project manager of the Winspear Opera House, points out some of the design details of the building.

Winspear Opera House Topping Out: January 10, 2008

On January 10, 2008, the Winspear Opera House was topped out, as a 60-foot steel beam was placed at the highest point of the structure. Board members, donors and civic leaders joined the Winspear family to sign the beam and celebrate this important milestone in construction.

TITAS, the Dallas non-profit presenter of the world's most highly acclaimed touring music and dance companies, will present it's season at the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts, beginning in fall 2009.

Wyly Theatre Topping Out

Wyly Topping Out: On May 8, 2008, donors, civic leaders and members of the design and construction team of the Wyly Theatre gathered on the construction site for the Topping Out celebration. Charles Wyly gave the cue for the crane to hoist the beam 132 feet in the air to the highest point of the Wyly Theatre, the world’s only vertical theatre.

View the first panels of the red glass exterior of the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House as they are installed. James McGrath of Foster + Partners describes the intricacies of the installation process and the inspiration behind the design. Next, structural engineer Jay Taylor of Magnuson Klemencic Associates explains the innovative structure of the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre as the temporary steel support columns are carefully removed.
