In the top tier of American opera companies, The Dallas Opera is a major contributor to the national and international reputation of Dallas. The Dallas Opera opened with an unforgettable performance by legendary soprano Maria Callas in November 1957. Subsequently, The Dallas Opera has presented many international stars in their American debuts, including Dame Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé, Jon Vickers, and Plácido Domingo, as well as designer/director Franco Zeffirelli. In 2009, The Dallas Opera will present the world premiere of Moby Dick by internationally renowned composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer in the inaugural season in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House.
One of the leading regional theaters in the country, Dallas Theater Center (DTC) performs to an audience of more than 80,000 North Texas residents annually. Founded in 1961, Texas Ballet Theater is the preeminent ballet of Fort Worth and Dallas. Under the direction of artistic director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., the Ballet brings unprecedented talent, beauty and artistic expression to the stages of Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall, Dallas' Music Hall at Fair Park and the historic Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas.
Dallas Black Dance Theatre is the oldest continuously operating professional dance company in Dallas. Founded in 1976 by artistic director Ann Williams, Dallas Black Dance Theatre creates and produces contemporary modern dance and educational programs in order to bridge cultures and reach diverse communities. The ensemble consists of 14 professional dancers performing a mixed repertory of modern, jazz, ethnic, and spiritual works by nationally and internationally known choreographers, including Alvin Ailey, Talley Beatty, Donald Byrd, Alonzo King and Milton Myers.
The Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico (ANMBF) is an educational performing dance organization dedicated to education and awareness of the Hispanic community and its cultural contribution to society. Artistic director Anita N. Martinez founded the ballet in 1975 in a recreation center on the west side of Dallas. In 1990, ANMBF produced its first season of professional dances employing dancers trained in Mexico.
TITAS, the Dallas non-profit presenter of the world's most highly acclaimed touring music and dance companies, will become the resident fine arts presenter at the Center. With a strong commitment to artistic excellence and innovation, TITAS has brought the world's most acclaimed dance, music and performing artists to Dallas for 25 years. In its eclectic and culturally diverse seasons of dance and music, TITAS has previously presented renowned artists of the international performance world including American Ballet Theatre, Mark Morris Dance Company, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Mikhail Baryshnikov, MOMIX, STOMP, Pilobolus, France's Lyon Opera Ballet, KODO Drummers of Japan, Korea's Samulnori and Twyla Tharp.
